A Week of Art

We got a week of holiday meant for winter sports but instead I decided to spend it on art.  I think I've mentioned this before, but I always feel more creative during holidays, when there's no homework and stress and everything. So I set a goal for myself to draw or paint something at least once a day. And here are pictures of some drawings/paintings I did over the holiday!

Day 1. A watercolour painting of the street I passed that night when I went for a walk at 10pm. I didn't want to make it too detailed, just have everything sort of blend in and bathe in the light of the street lamp.

Day 2. Sunrise by the window with a cup of coffee. I wanted to draw a sunrise, but didn't know what landscape I should draw, so I decided to go with a simple view out the window in the morning, with a cup of coffee and a journal. I added the flowers there because there were some paint stains on the paper from the previous painting, but I didn't want to waste the page so I just turned the stains into flowers and added a whole bouquet of them! The sunrise itself is done with watercolours, the rest with oil pastels.

Day 3. I got the idea for this when I listened to Fred Astaire by San Cisco. Those are the lyrics from the chorus, and it's a really good song. If you haven't heard of the band yet, you should check them out, they're great! I drew a small cafe at the corner of a street, you know the kind of coffee shops you go to for breakfast, and I've got a map of the world next to it because "he could take you 'round the world" . I'm quite happy with how this one turned out. I combined watercolours and oil pastels quite a lot here, and I think it looks pretty nice.

Day 4. This here is a quick drawing of some lady skeleton in a Black Parade uniform and crinoline, inspired by the song Welcome To The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance and its music video. I only recently started listening to MCR and I have to say that I'm in love this band and this song, and I wish I'd discovered their music earlier! Or actually I did try to listen to a few of their songs in 2013, when everyone was talking (and crying) about their break-up because I wanted to know what's so great about them. I didn't really like their songs then, I remember thinking, "Nah, this is some angsty emo rock band, who cares" as I was more into J-pop and mainstream pop then. Ironically they're now one of my favourite bands among other "angsty emo rock bands"! (Also, I just checked which date they broke up and it was on my birthday!! I take it back when I said I wish I'd listened to them earlier. That would've been the worst birthday present...)

Day 5. Here's an aquarelle painting inspired by those Tumblr/Instagram -ish photos. The paint I used came in tubes, and in Finnish it said "akvarellivärit" but translated as "water colours". They're different from the normal watercolours I use, but apparently it's still the same thing? I don't know. But it was fun painting with them. I've almost run out of white paint even though I've only used them for this painting, they came in such small tubes.

I bought the water colours from Tiger, a Danish variety store chain that sells a bunch of random things, and usually for only like 1-3€, so really cheap. They have literally everything and I love going shopping there, even if just browsing the different patterned notebooks and fun, useless toys and items. I also got a bag of fruit-flavoured candy and two milk chocolate coated coconut bars. The Baby Lips Dr. Rescue is actually from the local supermarket. This one's in Coral Crave and it's pretty much my favourite lip balm right now. It's also got a lovely eucalyptus scent, and is very moisturising.

Day 6. This one's another quick drawing I did while listening to acoustic versions of pop punk songs on Spotify. I really like the acoustic version of Six Feet Under The Stars by All Time Low. Somewhere In Neverland is also really good, I especially like the violin parts.

Day 7. I finished making the title and text for a project in art at school. We were supposed to make posters about important topics, I wanted to make mine about sexism and feminism, and sort of comic book and pop art -inspired. I finished it in today's class, I'm quite proud of it and I'm glad it turned out nice because I'd spent a lot of time on the letters! Let me know what you think in the comments!

But guess what my dad did when I showed this to him? Well, he said it looks nice, but then he laughed and started going on about how it's normal for men to objectify women because that's how nature works, and that's why girls dress up and wear makeup. I got really angry and explained that when girls wear makeup and clothes they like, it's hardly ever to impress boys, and that it doesn't mean that guys can objectify us because we're human too. But of course he wouldn't listen to me. So I guess my racist and homophobic father is also sexist. Great. I can't wait until I move out, and hopefully I do next year already.

We got to take some of our older art works home today, and here are two of my favourite ones I've done this year so far:

Still life. I think this is the best painting I've done actually, I never knew I could do the shading and details that well! This is the only time I've painted with acrylic paint, and it was really fun. I think still lifes are really fun to paint in general, actually. So are landscapes. I prefer to draw or paint from things I see in front of me rather than from my imagination.

Snowflake tree. The background is done with watercolours using wet-on-wet technique, and then I left the paper standing upright for a while for the green/yellow to sort of drip down. The tree is done with a black marker and the snowflakes with a white crayon and colour pencil. I think this one looks pretty cool!

All these photos can be found on my Instagram, so if you're not following me yet then maybe check it out? My username is @xforbaltimorex which is also my Tumblr URL, if you're interested. So I hope you enjoyed this post, and have a great day!

January Favourites

I hope it's not too late to do a January favourites. The thing about these kinds of blog posts is that you see a lot of beauty products/makeup, but I don't wear makeup or use any beauty products, so it's kind of hard to find things to add to the list. The only makeup I have is this heart-shaped, little kids' makeup set from Claire's that has some eyeshadow (really awful ones because the colours don't show and the only thing you get is a bunch of glitter that won't come off), lip gloss which is actually pretty good, and blush that doesn't do anything...

But last month I've really loved this nail polish from Mavala, in the colour "pink gold". You can't really tell from the picture, but the colour is really adorable and isn't too bright, but it's still quite special because of having both gold and pink in it.

As for fashion, this grey sweater is probably my favourite right now. Unfortunately I don't know where it's from. It's really comfy, the pattern is cool and it's just perfect for a cold January day!

For music, lately I've been listening to Panic! at the Disco a lot. P!atD is a pop rock/pop punk band from Las Vegas formed in 2004 and has the current lineup of vocalist and guitarist Brendon Urie and bassist Dallon Weekes. My favourite song by them has got to be Nails For Breakfast, Tacks For Snacks. I like the lyrics and the catchy chorus, I think it's a really good song!

I finally found the 8th series of Doctor Who online, which is great because they don't have it on Netflix. Doctor Who is a British sci-fi tv show about The Doctor, a time lord who travels through time and space in his spaceship the TARDIS (which is bigger on the inside). There's drama, a lot of action, suspense, a bit of horror, and it's awesome. So far the 8th series isn't as good as the previous seasons, but it's interesting to follow the relationship between The Doctor and his companion Clara, now that he's regenerated. I'd say this season has more drama than the previous ones, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Currently I'm reading The Unknown Soldier by Väinö Linna. It's a historical novel set in the Continuation War between Finland and Russia, and it's told from the point of view of ordinary soldiers. Normally I don't like to read books in Finnish, but in Finnish class we're doing a project on classic novels and I thought this one could be interesting. And I wasn't wrong. The novel has action, comedy, tragedy, and it just shows how real war is. There are so many different characters, and they're all interesting and unique. It's quite long, and a bit heavy to read in the original language as it was written in the 50s and the dialogue is written in dialects, which can be difficult to understand. I don't know how i'ts like in the English translation, though.

So there are my January favourites! Right now I'm on winter break, which is cool. I don't know if you have this in your country, but here winter break is different from Christmas holiday, which takes place around Christmas and New Year. Winter break is a week long holiday, also called ski break or sport break, because you're supposed to go skiing or do other winter sports or something when there's lots of snow around this time of the year in February. Except there's hardly been any snow this year... I don't even own skis and my ice skates broke, so I'm just staying at home. And it sucks because none of my friends ever invite me to hang out with them or anything...

Those are some photos I took on my phone while I went for a walk yesterday, at around 8 p.m. There's something strange about going for a walk when it's dark, especially in winter. The air is crisp and chilly, and at some places with little light pollution you could see the stars. And especially in a small town like this when there's hardly anyone out and about after dark, it can feel like you're the only person out there, and the air is still, and it's very magical. I need to go for walks like this more often!

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this blog post! Tell me what your January favourites are, I'd love to hear about them! Have a great day,

xx,
Mary
